Quick Facts on Hamilton Transit:

  • Hamilton has been spending increasingly less on transit over time. Adjusting for inflation to 2016 dollars, the city spent $83.85 million on transit in 1994, $61.15 million on transit in 2005, and $59.02 million on transit in 2016.
  • Hamilton City Council approved the Rapid Ready transit plan, which requires a capital investment of $156 million and a commitment to address an operating cost shortfall of $45 million. Council also approved the Ten Year Local Transit Strategy which includes a requirement to invest $57 million on new buses alone. While these plans have been approved, Council has yet to commit these dollars, and scheduled fare increases are insufficient to cover the costs.
  • Each year the federal government gives cities money generated from the federal gas tax with the intent that it be invested in projects that reduce greenhouse gas emissions, clean our air, and clean our water. Many cities across the country spend their gas tax money on transit. Of $32 million in federal gas tax transfers to Hamilton last year, $3 million went to transit and $29 million to road work.

The Petition:

The HSR is broken and it’s time to fix it. We’re calling on Hamilton City Council to take our city’s transit needs seriously by committing to substantially increase funding for the HSR.

There are a number of actions Council can take in the short term to increase funding, such as spending more of our federal gas tax dollars on transit, like other cities do. Hamilton can also raise taxes to deliver the transit we need and deserve. The scheduled fare increases are not going to fix the HSR while tax dollars for transit remain stagnant.

Public transit is a public good, and enhancing service will bring benefits to residents across Hamilton.

It is time our city council started prioritizing the HSR/public transit instead of simply treating it as an ‘add on’ to get to “if we can.” Indeed, if we want all of this wonderful investment in our city to continue then safe, modern and RELIABLE public transit is ESSENTIAL – as well as being socially responsible.

Public transit is not ‘a frill!’

And it needs more than $3 million of gas tax money to be spent on it – a LOT more!!

This isn;t only about funding but its about mismanagement .The problem starts at the top and until that is fixed no amount of funding will correct the problem at hand

I support this petition wholeheartedly, with some reservations. Let’s not just look at this issue (and other issues) from the other end of a tunnel, but try to see (and discuss) the broader socio-economic impacts,, and their very real policy implications.

Our city’s transit system should be one of the primary tools to move people safely and reliably, support mobility of our most vulnerable, and be a source of pride for residents. We, as a city, should ensure that the appropriate support and investment is put forth to achieve these goals. Spending money that’s earmarked for GHG reduction initiatives on road work is irresponsible and embarrassing.

I believe that reliable HSR service is key to residents who have no alternative due to either income or circumstances.

    Why the word "" State "’ … where’s the due diligence ?

But-I certainly support the Petition with a Question :

How will "’ improvements "" seriously considered / demanded

affect needs for ATS / DARTS (budget/vehicles/personnel) ?

There needs to be a B-Line stop added to the junction at King Street and Wellington Streets instead of the absurd double stops of this line—barely a block apart—in the downtown business area. It makes no sense to us, the actual riders, though it seems to satisfy the car driving ‘technical ’experts’

The Wellington junction has the largest population of seniors in the downtown lower city who would benefit hugely from a convenient bus stop such as this. (The same holds true at the reverse junction of Main/Wellington, as I’m sure that many residents would use it to destinations such as Eastgate Square, along with other stops on the route.)

I almost became a bus driver but when I found out that the hours were not employee friendly, I was glad I didn’t. The expectation to work overtime whether you like it or not, have no weekends free at all when you start and to work split shifts that can be sometimes 3 splits to make you committed to your work for more than 14 hours in a day, is too much to ask of any person.
