Fair Fees for Stormwater

Environment Hamilton has begun outreach to have Hamilton introduce a new fair fee for stormwater in our city - but we can't do it without your support. Read and sign the petition below!

More information can be found on our website here.

Dear Mayor Eisenberger and City Council,

I am calling on you to address the rising costs and risk of stormwater management in the City of Hamilton by listening to staff recommendations to reevaluate how we, as a city, pay for the costs of our stormwater management system.  As it stands now, households pay for rising stormwater management costs primarily through our water bills. Property owners contributing the most to stormwater runoff which strains our system, pollutes our environment and degrades our infrastructure pay little or none of the costs of dealing with the problem. This approach to stormwater fees has resulted in an underfunded system. Residents don’t see how much we are paying and why. I want fair fees for Hamilton to provide:

1. Transparency (see what we’re paying for)

2. Equity (everyone pays their fair share)

3. Sustainability (city can reliably fund and prepare for the future)

4. Incentives (encourage people to do better, reward those who do)

5. Stewardship (protecting environment and water quality)

I urge you to support Environment Hamilton’s call to adopt a fair stormwater fee system, following the lead of other Ontario municipalities.

It’s unacceptable that our sewage treatment plants overflow with heavy rains. It’s unacceptable that raw, untreated sewage, including tampons and hypodermic needles, ends up on our beaches and shorelines.

It’s time to be PRO-active and prepare for increased demands on our treatment plants and sewage systems.

    Thanks!!!

Gail McGinnis I live beside Center Mall, all that new black pavement is causing our area to be heated up and it is hard to live here. I have noticed that the only thing the water after a storm can to to is the drains. There are gardens, a few, but there is no way they can get any water from the run off. The gardens are all above ground surrounded by cement curbs. If the builders had just made a way for the run off to drain in to the gardens, it would save a lot of water and not allow the rainwater to run directly into the drain. There also should be a lot more garden and trees there too. No shade and no where for people who are walking to sit at all. This is not a people friendly mall, only a car friendly. No wonder the mall is failing! A whole lot of stores are empty or going out of business.

Everyone needs to pay their fair share not just the home owners. We had problems with Insurance Company and with Repairmen. It was a horrible time – It felt like everyone was taking advantage of us.

We had a sewer back up in 2009 and our insurance co. has increased our rates and capped our insurance as well as the contractors that worked on our home they too have take advantage of us due to no fault of our own. I believe that everyone should pay their fair share not just the home owners.

Since we had the back up sewer problem in 2009 we had issues with our insurance being raised and capped as well as contractors taking advantage of us also through no fault of our own. It is time that the sewer system be taken care of promptly and everyone should pay their fair share not just the home owners.

Keeping vegetation somewhat green during periods of drought such as this helps to reduce overland water flow when and if it ever does rain. Water rates including surcharges should not discourag basic watering of vegetation by residents and should distribute actual costs of storm water management to all of those who are likely contributing to the problem

Hamilton water rates with their included fixed surcharges are very high and likely do not reflect actual impact onthe envirionment throught water use especially in a dry summer such as this one when we try our best to keep vegetation from dying through watering of vegetation including street trees and related plantings.Keeping this city green is important to reduce overland water flow especially after dry periods such as this.
