Fair Fees for Stormwater

Environment Hamilton has begun outreach to have Hamilton introduce a new fair fee for stormwater in our city - but we can't do it without your support. Read and sign the petition below!

More information can be found on our website here.

Dear Mayor Eisenberger and City Council,

I am calling on you to address the rising costs and risk of stormwater management in the City of Hamilton by listening to staff recommendations to reevaluate how we, as a city, pay for the costs of our stormwater management system.  As it stands now, households pay for rising stormwater management costs primarily through our water bills. Property owners contributing the most to stormwater runoff which strains our system, pollutes our environment and degrades our infrastructure pay little or none of the costs of dealing with the problem. This approach to stormwater fees has resulted in an underfunded system. Residents don’t see how much we are paying and why. I want fair fees for Hamilton to provide:

1. Transparency (see what we’re paying for)

2. Equity (everyone pays their fair share)

3. Sustainability (city can reliably fund and prepare for the future)

4. Incentives (encourage people to do better, reward those who do)

5. Stewardship (protecting environment and water quality)

I urge you to support Environment Hamilton’s call to adopt a fair stormwater fee system, following the lead of other Ontario municipalities.

As a Ward 1 resident who is paying some of the highest taxes in Hamilton for a relatively small piece of property; plus paying sewage fees based on water intake some of which is used for watering the garden ( that my rain barrel can not accommodate) and does not go back to the sewers, it is very disturbing that large business are exempt from paying their fair share of the sewage fees. City elected officials need to do the right thing for those of us who have elected them and put our faith in their judgement.

Sandi Mugford says, I planted more than 26 trees on my small city lot. With the demise of the street Ash trees, I am now caring for an ornamental pear, which I requested from forestry (thank you). However I am being penalized for planting, maintaining and improving the enviornment in the area of the city that needs it most…down here by big steel and smoke. Why should I have to pay double for water that is going into the ground, maintaining greenspace and improving local air quality. Please remind yourself why this matters.

Rebalancing the fee structure is the logical first step in order to encourage more thought being put to better land use, the long-term sustainability of our city infrastructure and it’s funding sources.

It’s only fair that those who contribute more to storm water should pay more. Let’s take another look at our current system and turn it into one that’s fair.
